CHN Diabetic Education Making Big Strides in Helping Others
With nearly 10% of residents of the Tri-County area (Waushara, Green Lake, Marquette) diagnosed with diabetes, it takes a toll on the area—physically and financially. In response to the 27% increase in diabetes, Community Health Network in Berlin developed a diabetic program. The multidisciplinary team has been working to aid those who suffer from diabetes to better handle the challenges that accompany being diabetic.
Run by Nancy Gimenez, a registered nurse, Danielle Krueger, a registered dietitian, and Sarah Gerber, a Pharmacist, the team has worked to cover all the bases for those diabetics looking to improve their quality of life.
A recent survey of participants of the CHN Diabetes program boasts 100% positive feedback. Those participating were not only pleased with the quality of the material, but also the positive effects on their health. Participants liked the relaxed atmosphere along with the manageable way the information was presented.
After two years in the program 87 of 100 participants decreased their Hemoglobin A1C levels by an average of 2.10 points. Hemoglobin A1C is a measure of how well diabetes is managed. Reducing this number helps prevent complications associated with diabetes.
More positive results accompanying the program include:
- Weight loss of 3-4lbs
- Decrease in bad cholesterol by 6.45%
- Increase in good cholesterol by 7.80%
- Decrease in Triglycerides by 33.5%
The program offers a free Diabetic Support Group. The group meets monthly and is open to the public. Recognized by the American Diabetes Association, The Diabetes Self-Management program provides diabetic education by a team of health professionals working with your physician.
The program goes one step further by offering one-on-one meetings with CHN’s registered dietitian. Participants receive personalized meal plans that help with glucose control, how to read food labels, portion control, carbohydrate counting and heart healthy food—selection and preparation.
For further information on Diabetes, please contact Nancy Gimenez at 920-361-6530. |

Along with these fundraisers, a mailing was sent out to the local and surrounding places of business asking for donations to help complete the process. The PTO President at the time, Melissa Richards, applied for two grants. One of the grants was received from the CHN Foundation - in the amount of $2,500.

We All Need a Good Night’s Sleep
6.26.2009 - Have you been snoozing through your days, and feel like you’re in a daze? Do you doze off any time you sit down for 5 minutes? Do you feel like you sleep all night, yet feel sleepy all day? With the busy and stressful lives we lead, it’s hard to determine just what “rested” truly is.
At CHN, we are here to help answer those questions. It starts with Steven M. Brown, MD, who is board certified in Pulmonary and Internal Medicine. By answering a simple questionnaire entitled the “Epworth Sleepiness Scale,” those answers assist Dr. Brown in determining any abnormalities in one’s sleep. “The questionnaire has 8 questions, and the patient ranks on a scale of 0-3 their chances of dozing off in specific situations,” said Dr. Brown. “This gives me a baseline on the patient and we go from there.” [read more]

At age 52 he suffered a heart attack, and since that point he has had mini-strokes, a hip replacement, two knee replacements, and eye surgeries; along with his constant battle with congestive heart failure and diabetes. “I feel like I’ve been recycled,” joked Emil.
